E-portfolio Proposal

Here's a copy of my e-portfolio proposal.

Why have you chosen to complete an e-portfolio?
I have chosen to design an e-portfolio due to its potential organizational capabilities. I have a tendency of keeping everything I have done or been credited with, however, I do not keep them in one place. More or less, I do not lose anything, I, however, will take a full day locating everything. With the e-portfolio, I have the opportunity and the convenience to have everything made digital and located in one place, rather than have it scattered all around my room or on three separate external hard drives.

What professional uses does an e-portfolio have for you?
An e-portfolio will offer me the convenience of allowing future employers to preview everything I have accomplished prior to me being called for a job interview. Also, I feel that a well-designed e-portfolio will also showcase my present computer software knowledge which may present me the opportunities of teaching future information processing or computer science classes.

What content do you plan to include?
I wish to include my resume, my internship report, my certifications (Kinesiology Degree, Standard First Aid & CPR/AED and Canadian Sport Safety Program), an example lesson plan, work experience, and volunteer work.

What graphic design considerations have you taken into account for the look of your e-portfolio?

I like to use a design similar to the amazon.ca website. The beauty of that website is that the navigation menus are always on top. Once you have reached the page you wish to browse, an expanded options list specific to that section is always located on the left. The best thing is if you are ever lost, by clicking on their logo, you will always return to their homepage.

Here's a copy of my sketch of which navigation menus I wish to include in my design.

What concerns do you have about the process? How do you plan to address these concerns?
My biggest concern is the resolution of my digital copies. I want to find the balance between having a nice, legible copy uploaded to the e-portfolio without having an overly long load time. I do not want to sacrifice the resolution to the point where the reader is straining to read my information nor do I want such a high resolution that my reader can leave their computer, have an five course meal and be back in time for the webpage to finish loading. I think the best solution is trial and error and testing the load time on various computers to see where the appropriate load time would be.

Another concern would be my choice of aesthetic design in terms of color of background versus font, size of the font and ease of use of my e-portfolio. I think the appropriate solution in terms of the color choices and size of the font is to find neutral colors that contrast each other but still show flair of professionalism. As a result, that would rule out color combination options like hot flamingo pink and turquoise. In terms of size of fonts, I would have to choose a size and a style of font that will be easily legible and are font commonly on both Mac and PC. Lastly, in terms of ease of use of my e-portfolio, I can ask my peers, family and friends to browse through my e-portfolio once it’s complete. This allows me the opportunity to receive constructive and honest feedback on the design of the e-portfolio. This process will provide me with enough feedback and evidence to make an inform decision on if or how to make appropriate changes to the e-portfolio.

  1. Great plan Greg. You have addressed all of the major aspects of planning very thoroughly. The layout considerations you share are correct and will allow you to have an effective product when you are done. You have no stone uncovered in my opinion.

    Good luck.
